Understanding Internet Speeds

To help you understand internet speeds and other information you’ll get from the speed test, we’ve included the following tips. Here is what you’ll learn from the internet speed test:

MBPS: Megabits per second shows how fast you can upload and download files.

Download speed: Maximum data your computer can receive from the internet in a second.

Upload speed: Maximum data your computer can send to the internet in a second.

When you measure your download and upload speeds, keep these considerations in mind:

  • Service speeds are based on hardwired devices. You may not see full speed capabilities when using Wi-Fi.
  • If testing on a Wi-Fi-enabled device, make sure you’re connected to your home Wi-Fi network, rather than a cellular network.
  • JavaScript is also used, so make sure JavaScript is enabled.
  • Anti-virus software and security proxies can significantly decrease download results.
  • To test on a mobile device, run a speed test from the Ookla® app, available in the App Store or Google Play®.
